On The Clock: Picks 7 – 8

A few things have happened lately, none of which interest me in the least. Carson Palmer is definitely, assuredly serious about leaving… Yawn! The owners and players have till Friday to come up with a new CBA, unless they extend it again (which they will)… Also, Joe Reedy is reporting that Mel Kiper Jr. compared Cam Newton to Akili Smith, and then picked him to the Bengals in his latest mock draft. Thanks Mel!

All week we have been revealing picks from my mock draft. On the clock today are picks 7 – 8. To recap:

1. Carolina – Cam Newton, QB, Auburn
2. Denver – DaQuan Bowers, DE, Clemson
3. Buffalo – Blaine Gabbert, QB, Missouri
4. Cincinnati – Patrick Peterson, CB, LSU
5. Arizona – Von Miller, LB, Texas A&M
6. Cleveland – AJ Green, WR, Georgia

With the seventh pick in the NFL draft, the San Francisco 49ers select: Robert Quinn, DE, North Carolina. New 49ers coach Jim Harbaugh takes over in San Fran, but that doesn’t necessarily mean that they will go QB in the first round. In our scenario, the elite QBs are gone, but one of the premiere pass rushers are still on the board. While Patrick Willis has been a stud at linebacker, Manny Lawson has been a dud and Quinn is an elite talent that projects to a 3-4 linebacker / pass rush specialist. The 49ers will have to get a QB in later rounds, or they could trade for a vet.

With the eighth pick in the NFL draft, the Tennessee Titans select: Nick Fairley, DT, Auburn. The big DT that tore up the BCS championship game has taken a lot of heat of late due to being a one year wonder and not playing hard on all downs. While that will bump him down the boards a bit, I definitely don’t see him making it past the Titans. Tennessee is one of many teams with a giant hole at quarterback, but need and value dictate this pick.
