Draft Profile: Colin Kaepernick

CBS Sports Player Card

Position:  Quarterback

Size:  6’5″ – 233 pounds

What I like: Kaepernick has great size and athleticism (4.53 yards in the 40-yard dash) and an outstanding arm as well. He was a promising baseball pitcher with a fastball around 90 mph before he decided to focus on football. Believe it or not, some scouts have Kaepernick rated as the best quarterback in the draft and with all his measurables, you can understand why. Plus, most people believe he will be available when the Bengals pick in the second round, saving them a first-round pick on someone else.

What I don’t like: Kaepernick will probably need some time to transition into an NFL offense after playing in Nevada’s spread/pistol attack. Furthermore, he will also need to adjust to the top-level competition in the NFL considering he didn’t play many big-time teams in college. And finally, he will need to add some bulk to his slight frame if he hopes to withstand the rigors of the NFL.

Final thoughts: Kaepernick wouldn’t be my first choice as the Bengals quarterback of the future, but I’d be willing to accept him if that’s how the draft plays out. There’s a lot to like in terms of athleticism and arm strength and he could develop into an outstanding player. To me, it makes a lot more sense to look at Kaepernick and the other options in the second round rather than take a risk on Cam Newton and Blaine Gabbert in the first round.
