A day after crapping the bed on the Johnathan Joseph sweepstakes, the Bengals actually made a savvy move by acquiring former Arizona Cardinal guard Deuce Lutui. Bengals.com’s Geoff Hobson is reporting that the deal is for two years.
Lutui is a massive run blocker, who is probably most famous for making Derek Anderson laugh during a Cardinals blowout loss which sparked Anderson’s tirade at a post game conference. He’s also had reported issues with his weight, but that’s nothing new for Bengals fans.
Luti, a USC product, has spent most of his time at right guard, but may move to the left side for the Bengals. He also increases the Bengals Polynesian pipeline (he’s from Tonga) and is friends with Rey Maualuga and Domata Peko.
Cincinnati’s best chance to win games this season is with a punishing run game that takes pressure off the quarterback and helps the team dominate time of possession. Lutui will help in that regard. ESPN’s ScoutsInc. ranks him as the 11th best guard in the NFL and he’s only 28 years old, so he’s actually a legitimate acquisition by the Bengals.
I know, I know.
Cincinnati’s next move should be to lock in on a between-the-tackles running back who is capable of handling a lot of carries. And if it’s not Cedric Benson, who may face disciplinary action from the NFL (and who seems to have been low-balled by the Bengals), I won’t be broken-hearted. I actually think Marion Barber might look good in stripes.
Whoever it is, the offensive line in front of him should be the strength of this team.
Which will allow us all to at least feel good about something.
