Bleacher Report: Draft Strategery

No, the headline doesn’t have a typo. It’s a reference to perhaps the best presidential performance in Saturday Night Live history by Will Ferrell.

Anyway, I’m a little late to this article, but it’s an interesting one nonetheless. Bleacher Report’s Bengals site had an interesting overview of the Bengals’ draft plans, even suggesting some potential late-round picks. Click the image for the article.

  1. Bill says:

I can’t see Mike Brown packaging both firsts and moving up. I don’t see anyone that they might want who is equal to the combined value to the two players they will get at #17 and #21.

Trading one of those picks to move down to get someone’s 2nd and 3rd round picks would be good considering the Bengals’ success rate in those rounds. But it won’t happen. According to the NFL’s Draft Pick Value Chart (http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/draft06/news/story?id=2410670), pick #21 is worth 800 pts. Only the first 3 teams to pick (IND, STL and MIN) have enough value in their 2nd and 3rd round picks combined to total 800. It’s a long shot that one of these 3 teams will give up those picks to move up a dozen spots. Beyond those 3 teams, it would take packaging a third pick to give Mike Brown “equal value” for #21, and I sure can’t see that happening. I would love to be wrong on that.

I think it’s pretty safe to say that the Bengals will use the #17 and #21 picks. So let’s have fun debating over the next 3 months who those guys should be.
