Playing football with the Bengals

This past Friday I was lucky enough to be a part of a great event put on by the Athletes United Foundation . I was on a flag football team sponsored by Rich’s, Give and Go and John Morrell that competed in a celebrity flag football tournament at Paul Brown Stadium. The celebrity part came in to it as each team was quarterbacked by a current Cincinnati Bengal.

The event started on Thursday night at Drees Pavilion with a dinner and “Draft Party”. There was a very good buffet dinner followed by some interviewing of some current players and then the draft. The draft consisted of each team being pulled out of a hat and then selecting who would be their QB the next day.

My team was the 16th team out of 20 so many of our top choices were off the board when it was our turn. We went with Thomas Howard as he seemed to be the most athletic person left. (obviously the 3 QB’s were the first selections followed by Mohamed Sanu who was a QB in high school)

Bright and early we arrived at Paul Brown on Friday morning to begin the games. Let me tell you, it was awesome. A bunch of guys playing football with their professional idols just hanging around. You look one way you see Peko and Whitworth joking with some guys then the other you see Dalton warming up with some random dudes, it was cool.

Thomas Howard was not able to make it Friday for personal reasons so in stepped Vontaze Burfict. Burfict had a good arm and played really well until he had to leave early and we had Dennis Roland fill in for our last game.

All in all it was an awesome event. As a once upon a time athlete, it was fun to be out there for one day with the real athletes and able to chat it up with them.

For Example:

On Thursday Marvin Jones, Mohamed Sanu and Kashif Moore were interviewed by Mo Egger and somehow he got Sanu and Moore to sing their fight songs from college. I have video but I am not sure if it is meant for the public yet.

Then on Friday I chatted with Chris Pressley, Andy Dalton, Marvin Jones, Mohamed Sanu, Brian Leonard, Rey Maualuga and Dennis Roland about the offseason and OTA’s.

I once again want to say thanks to the sponsors for setting up the team and Ray for getting me on it. Without that how would I ever have the chance to score touchdowns in Paul Brown Stadium and record interceptions against Chris Pressley and Mohamed Sanu?
