Late Night Roster Thoughts

With the season opener only a few days away and the Bengals roster cuts made today, there’s no better time than now to offer some rapid fire thoughts on the roster.

-I’m sad to see Roddrick Muckelroy go. I thought Muckelroy played well in the preseason (and in his limited opportunities as a rookie) and figured he would be a decent replacement should Rey Maualuga ever get injured. But with Vontaze Burfict flashing some playmaking skills and steady discipline, the Bengals chose to keep Taze over Muck. I would have preferred if the team went a little lighter at receiver and kept Muck around. Instead, some other team will benefit from his presence.

-The offensive line still scares me. Any team would be in some sort of trouble if it lost two starters up front. Fortunately, the Bengals have some depth, but they could use more talent. I can’t help but wonder if they may take a look at Dan Koppen, a former Pro Bowler, who was cut by the Patriots today. Koppen is on the downside of his career, but you can bet he’s a smart player having played in New England, and he might be able to offer some versatility at guard as well. Plus, unlike Jeff Faine, who was signed off the street, Koppen has been in camp, so he should be in better shape.

-I actually like the receiver and cornerback groups. Both groups were concerns when the offseason workouts started, but even Marvin Lewis admitted he was pleasantly surprised by the receivers’ performance. Perhaps there isn’t a clear-cut No. 2 opposite A.J. Green, but there is a deep platoon with plenty of talent. Plus, the emergence of Marvin Jones has given the Bengals a rising playmaker who emerged from deep in the draft. The corners are older, but they’re more experienced too, and I’d make that trade every time if I had to.

-The Bengals are starting the season with way too much talent on the sidelines. Travelle Wharton and Kyle Cook are gone. Bernard Scott might be too. Dontay Moch is out due to a suspension, and Robert Geathers and Carlos Dunlap have missed almost a month of practice. Can we cancel the preseason already, or at the very least cut down the games?

At least the games that count will be here soon. Bring on the Ratbirds.

Who Dey.
