Over the past few days, I have taken a look at the positions that have significant needs to be addressed either through free agency or the draft. I put a poll with each to gauge your opinions on how the Bengals should approach each position. And you have spoken.
The offensive line is not slated for an overhaul like the running backs or linebackers, and it isn’t in need of a significant addition like safety or receiver. The linebacker group is another position that could be in for a complete overhaul this offseason. All of the veteran players are currently free agents. How many are worth bringing back? Could the Bengals turn them all loose and start over?
Another position headed for an overhaul is the running backs. Only BJGE and Dan Herron are signed with them team past March 11. With the rest as free agents, now is a perfect time to reshape a position that has been a significant culprit in the under-performing offense.
When is the last time you can remember the Bengals having a formidable secondary? Not just good corners (Joseph/Hall), but an entire secondary? It’s been a while. Until free agency begins in a few weeks, it is difficult to know just how the Bengals are crafting their approach to the draft. And the group that we could debate about most over what the right approach would be is the wide receivers.
This position has been more patchwork than plan for too long. It is time the Bengals take a quality safety high in the draft or snatch a guy the way the 49ers swooped in and stole Donte Whitner a couple of years ago.
As unexcited as I was about the teams participating in this year’s Super Bowl, congratulations are still in order to the winner. So here is a tip of the hat to the Baltimore Ravens, along with as many nice things as I can muster. (Sorry it isn’t a longer list.)
