I think everyone has made good points on this topic. I lean towards the side that says “keep the picks” Pitt cant afford him so chances are he won’t be there next year anyway. Guys like Manningham would come cheaper and the guy has proven he can make the big catch. Bengals need to keep this unit together and to do that they need to address the star players they have on the roster now. Bill made the best point, we can’t let guys walk cause we can’t pay them. Thats why the Steelers are in the position there in now. Lets not make same mistake.

The real issue is whether the bengals are going to use the $60 million in cap room they have (no. 3 in the NFL). If they do, and get two quality free agents (like Arian Foster, Mario Williams, and especially Carl Nicks), then you can give up a first for a guy like Mike Wallace who is in the top three of WR’s in the league. But, if the bengals ignore the free agent market as they alsways do, and refuse to spend any money, then they have to keep the pick because then they cannot explain how they are going to fill the many holes they have (RB, WR, OG, S, DB, SLB). And the fac tthat the Cincy media is silent on this issue just further shows their complicity with the way the team is run.

Yeah, I need to agree with nate and bill here. I think the Bengals see more success with a better line next year than another receiver. Given the guys on the roster; green, shipley and gresham. A better line helps them do what they do and beat coverage.

Keep the picks, take the young talent and make your whole team better, not just your passing game.

As Bill said, this isn’t simply Wallace vs. a draft pick. The Bengals definitely need an impact receiver opposite A.J. Green, but they shouldn’t pursue an extremely expensive on that will cost a draft pick as well. They can sign someone like Meachem, who will be cheaper than Wallace, and still keep both their first-round picks.

Draft picks are never sure things, but I bet every GM in the league is jealous that the Bengals have two this year. They shouldn’t give up that luxury easily. Plus, I’m not sure Wallace alone is enough to lift them into the next stratosphere. But with two first-rounders and a reasonable WR on top of that, they have enough talent and available cap space to be a force for years to come.

I understand where you are coming from, but you have to consider that Wallace costs the Bengals more than just a first round pick. He costs a lot of cap room too. Instead of costing rookie money, he is going to command serious cash. How happy are you going to be in two years if they have to let Dunlap or Atkins walk because they gave the money to Wallace?

And then instead of having the #17 and #21 picks, the Steelers have the #21 and #24 picks. How excited are you going to be to have Nate Livings play another year at left guard because the Steelers took DeCastro/Glenn at #21 instead of the Bengals?

Yes, having Wallace and Green makes for a sick receiver corp. But it comes at the expense of some other position. So I have to agree with Nate. A cheaper guy like Meachem + 2 first round picks is a greater overall value to the Bengals than an expensive Wallace + 1 first round pick.

Bengals need to play to win not hopefully win in a few years. Wallace would put assessing in the seats at PBS and give the Bengals a better shot of winning now instead of hoping that some college kid can successfully transition to the NFL. Mike Wallace has proven he is an elite WR and a major deep threat. Not even Andrew Luck has proven anything as far as playing in the NFL. How many 1st round picks have turned out to be a bust and are home watching the games just like us?! Get the proven elite player while you got a chance and have 2 ProBowl receivers lining up for Andy Dalton to target and make a solid run for the SuperBowl now; not in a few years from now. This move is a no-brainer and will excite all of us fans who have stuck by our team waiting for a solid contender and bring pride to the QueenCity. We want to win now! WhoDey!!

to me the bengals need a power offensive guard one who is explosive off the ball and one to be solid in pass blocking,Taylor Mays when healthy can provide strength at safety.As far as rb i like the kid from uc Pead is a tough rb with bursts of speed at times and can be a brawler carrying the ball he will be there 3rd rd as far as 2nd rd go after a speed cover cb there will be plenty to choose from,but they have to protect Dalton to be successful.

When I first saw this, I was worried about how he would mesh with the offense that Jay Gruden has put in. I like that he’s been assigned to coach the defensive backs and special teams instead. Mike Zimmer will keep him in check if need be. And it certainly can’t hurt to have another guy around with head coaching experience and an eye for talent. I wonder if it will influence/affect a potential pursuit of Raiders free agent Michael Bush.

i agree with you there. Thats why they need to sit where they are. Seems to me that the RB position is deep this year. I’ve watched clips on them all. We can’t waste these 1st Rd picks. DeCastro at 17, if he’s there, GET HIM. Watched clips of him too. The guy is a pulling machine. The holes he opens up…. WOW!!! B.Scott can run behind him. Still if the Bengals can get Doug Martin in Rds 3-5, then i think we get him.

There’s a ton of love for DeCastro everywhere, including by Mike Mayock, who is well-respected, but I have a feeling the Bengals will end up with Cory Glenn. They’ve established a connection with Georgia (Atkins, Green, Pollack, Thurman, Geathers, etc.) and Glenn is massive, which they seem to value in linemen. He’s also versatile (seen as a guard-tackle type), which I think they like as well. I haven’t watched enough tape on him to determine whether he’s better than DeCastro, but my gut tells me he could end up with the Bengals.

I’m a firm believer that in today’s NFL, RB’s are an after thought. Look at the running games for both the Giants and the Patriots. Their run games were terrible. I personally feel like there are others way to spend the draft picks than running back. Its not like the Bengals have had the best of luck drafting running backs in the first round anyway. Shore up the offensive line, see what Scott can do for you. If you improve the o-line and scheme, who knows MAYBE we have our back already. I will say this though, IF the Bengals were to land DeCastro at either of those first round picks, I will be buying my season tickets within minutes after the selection. That’s how much want him to be a Bengal.

I like the SEC also, tough conference. I comment before that i didn’t like SEC backs. But after looking at T.Rich’s numbers, i changed my mind. Playing behind a Heisman winner helped keep a lot of wear an tear off of him. The bulk of his carries came in his Jr year. There’s a lot of SEC backs that come into the league and get injuried in first yr. McFadden, Ingram, Felix Jones, just to name a few. If he falls then “ABSOLUTELY” grab him, but we don’t have to reach. Another team to watch is the Browns. Some say they are going to take RGIII, but with Colt McCoy on the roster, and if they decided to stick with him then RB is a must for them. “Bengal fans lets all hope the Browns go another direction and leave T.Rich alone.”

I commented on Mel and Todd draft lab. I looked at numbers for 4 of 5 top backs.(T.Rich, D.Martin, L.Miller, D.Wilson) and what i found if my research is correct, D.Martin numbers are very similar to T.Rich. Few things that stood out, DM played 9 more gms. So of course he had more carries, yards, and TD’s, but his avg yrds per carry, avg yrds per gm, are right there with TR. Even his receiving numbers, catches and yards are the same. Numbers dont lie and i like what i seen. As for L.Miller numbers were low, but he played 2 yrs so…. Doug Martin is the guy!!!!

These guys are experts? Look i know T. Rich is the best RB in the draft. All RB rankings has him #1. And i think i can speak for most all Bengal fans and say we dont need to trade up for him. We have to many other needs. The RB that we should aim for in my opinion is Doug Martin. Even thou Mel and Todd have him ranked low he is the best RB after T. Rich. If you need to see it for youself look at there career numbers from college. D.Martin did play 1 more yr than T.Rich but the numbers are very close. If D.Martin is ranked this low come draft day then maybe we can wait til Rd 3. If that happens he will be the steal of the draft. Check out the numbers, I have you might be suprised.

I love both of these picks. For some reason I don’t think either guy will slip, but if they do I would be ecstatic. I really like Kirkpatrick as the 2nd best corner after Claiborne (and don’t see as much character concerns as Jenkins.) Plus he is 6’3! DeCastro is my ideal guy if we can get him, even over Glenn in my book.

Like I said, I’m not a lawyer, and I figured there might be a reason why clubs didn’t already have something like this already in place. But given the regularity of headlines in which NFL players wind up in handcuffs, the Code of Conduct isn’t exactly a disincentive. If a player demonstrates himself to be a known risk to end up in the back of a squad car, it would be nice if there were some means of communicating with him in a language he understands very well… his paycheck!

Contract content of this nature may be prohibited by the CBA. A “stay out of legal trouble” for one’s rookie wage scale defined salary would likely be challenged as an unfair labor practice by the NFLPA, especially considering the NFL’s own behavioral regime. Missed games for legal reasons have a tendency to result in missed paychecks (or legal trouble generally). Substance stuff is definitely regulated by the CBA, so off limits for bilateral negotiations.

So this might not even be an option. That aside, you generally can’t contract to not break the law, as there’s a preexisting duty not to. Were he to contract to checking in at a certain time each night like he was on parole, not visiting certain clubs, foregoing smoking legal substances (apparently B.Scott needs to lay off the Black and Milds if he wants to boost lung capacity and aerobic capacity), and after a background check to find dubious characters in his life, to avoid them, that would probably be valid.

There’s a reason the NFL commissioner has the NFL Code of Conduct which forbids unseemly attention to the league, because he can’t punish someone for committing a crime – that’s what courts are for.

I think it depends on what you have to give up to leapfrog a few teams. If you’re just moving up in front of the Jets (a few picks) to get an elite talent, I think they should do it. That would probably cost only a late round pick that might not make the team anyway.

Good post. I hope the team goes after Meachem and I also like the idea of targeting Ravens guard Ben Grubbs. You would strengthen a weak spot and also weaken a divisional opponent. Unfortunately, Baltimore will do what they can to keep him, but they may not overpay considering they have money in Marshall Yanda, the other guard. Considering Cincy has fairly cheap Pro Bowl talent in Aj Green and Andy Dalton, they should be aggressive with their money in free agency. In one huge offseason, the Bengals could snag some big FAs, draft some very good players, and reclaim the optimism that was destroyed last year. Now is the time to load up.

If McShay is talking about the Bengals trading pick #21 to one of the 11 teams picking after them in the first round to take their first and either their second or third round picks (depending on their spot and the combined value of those picks), I would consider that a good move.

I would also be OK with trading pick #21 to get two seconds, giving the Bengals three seconds in total. Only the Eagles and Pats have two seconds right now, although draft day trades could change that, but this scenario is unlikely.

But I would not want them to give up a first to get a second and a third.

I think this is valid, historically, BAMA prospects haven’t transition from college well with the Bengals organization. John Copeland (1993 1st pick), Andre Smith (2009 1st pick), both took a while to adjust and were major letdowns. Even free agent additions from BAMA have underwhelmed with us, guys like Simeon Castille (2008 Rookie) didnt make good of their stay here. The most successful BAMA prospect the Bengals brought in was Evan Mathis (2008-10) who after leaving the organization became one of the top players in the league at Guard for the Eagles, not even allowing one sack last year. So many reasons not to trust the word of Nick Saban, he was a horrible judge of talent on the pro level and the Dolphins are still trying to recover from his blunders. Our staff should rely on the game tape, workout, and interview and make the decision to bring in talent on that criteria alone.

Using the 17th pick for a corner is a smart move. All Bengal fans know we have to replace JJ. I like Stephon Gilmore. Size and speed, and played in tough SEC. I don’t like SEC running backs thou. Something bout them idk… seems like there injury pron. Rough league with a lot of good defensive players. T Rich already has a lot of carries under his belt. Looking RB i would have to take Doug Martin. Ray Rice clone without all the carries and physical punishment T Rich has taken in his college career. Wheather they trade 21st pick or not CB and RB needs to be adressed in first 3 Rds. And we cant forget OG…

I think the team has to bring back Jennings and also get someone (perhaps a mid-tier type) in free agency as well. That seems like a lot of spending at one position (especially if they draft a player there too), but remember, they play the NFC East, a pretty pass-happy division (Cowboys, Giants, Eagles, Skins) in crossover games next year.
