Pretty Dissapointed

by Darren Hollywood 30. November 2009 14:51

I just read this on Bengals.com saying that it will be an uphill battle to sell out the Lions game.  How the hell does that happen to a 8-3 team?  It's a game where you're almost guaranteed to watch them improve to 9-3.  Not only are we close to the playoffs, we are only a few wins away from a first round bye.  What kind of fan doesn't want to snatch up some tickets and grab their son, daughter, dad, or friend and watch some their favorite football team destroy some Lions.

What is so disspointing is how this team is really trying to do something different, and it seems no one cares.

Don't worry Rey, I believe too.

  Lets see: Family of five @ $64. a pop = $320.00. Park far away for free and walk, no problem.  Add to that the concession stand trips with the kids, and that equals another $100. Factor in that it is three weeks before Christmas, and this becomes a rough trip for the "average Joe."  You see, some of us "fans" just can't swing it. Doesn't make us less of a fan. Doesn't mean we "don't care." Simply stated, we can't afford it.

Yeah, I have mentioned the above also, we will never fault people that just can't swing it.  It is the fans that preach boycott that we target.

It's a lot of money & it's the Lions. Really, though: they're down 6,000? What's PBS' capacity, 60k+? So it's 90%? That's pretty solid support in my book. The bigger problem is a greedy NFL that won't bend on blackout rules when the economy is in the tank. Just MHO, of course.

@TellItHowItIs
I don't blame you for not being able to swing it, but I wouldn't bring the entire family either.  Grab a friend and make him pay his own way and you're down to $100.  While that's still steep considering the time of year, it is easier to afford than a family trip.  After all, don't you deserve a weekend for yourself.  ;)

@David
It is the Lions, I get the apprehension, but you write about the Bengals everyday.  Don't you want to see them win in person instead of listening to it on the radio if it's blacked out?

I think its rough to ask anyone right before christmas to shell out for essentially should be a blowout game. Do I love the bengals? yes.  Do I love them to jeopordize getting my family the xmas gifts they deserve and want vs. dropping it on a 2nd rate NFL game.

Yes the bengals lost to oakland, and yes they didnt dominate the browns, and im sure that we'll see a much closer game than we should for the lions but id rather drive to indy and watch it than pay for it.

nfl tickets are flat out too expensive. the worst seats in the house are usually $50 or more.  the whole experience is around $100 usually for 1 person to park, eat, and sit.  this doesnt mean i dont love the bengals , ive got jerseys, a bengals gnome, an xmas ornament, etc throughout the years. i just love them from my family room tv, or local sports bar where fans are just as fanatical and into the games and not costing me a car payment to enjoy if i want to take my family.

Ryan,

I get it, not many people have the disposable income to toss away on a Bengals game.  I think the point of the post was to get to the people that would be going if not for some stupid revolution or whatever.

I think by the comments alone it is easy to see that the reason people are not attending games is not because of some banners or urinal cakes, it is because it is a tough economy and people are making better decisions with their money when it comes to entertainment.

I as well as any of the writers would never call any one out for not being able to afford to go to a game.

I understand the economy is rough and its a hard sell to convince people to play to come see a game where the Lions are involved this close to the holidays. However there are enough people in the region with enough disposable income. We aren't asking everyone in southwest Ohio to come, just 65,000. We can't dump on Bengals fans too hard this team has sold out every game for the past few years and some of those seasons were brutal. It appears to me this slow sales has nothing to do with bad fans, because they supported a bad team. It has to do with people really not being able to afford like this once did. My final point is football is truly a sport thats enjoyed better on TV. At home you can watch it on your huge HD flat screen in your comfortable chair with with chips and beer that didn't cost you $7 a serving, in the warmth of your home instead of bundled up outside.

Bundled up?  This is football, if you're going to a game in December you can leave the shirt at home.  All we need is beer, chili, and body paint to keep warm.
