The great Bengal Blackout

by Number 1 fan 16. October 2009 12:27

It appears the Bengals home sellout streak my be coming to an end. Fans for whatever reason are reluctant to buy tickets to the upcoming game against the Texans.  CincyJungle has a suggestion that holds some value to the Bengals. While they would lose revenue from the tickets being sold, they would probably gain in concession sales and good PR.

WhoDeyRevolution urges to not believe the hype. They equate sitting in a bar in NYC the same as supporting the players at Paul Brown.  I am sure when it is 3rd and short and the crowd noise is needed to help disrupt the offense of the Texans they will be distracted by all of the cheering from Phoebe's in NYC, Washington DC bars and Blackfin. While I may agree with the motive of the Bengals sustaining success, I can't get on board with the idea that you can support the team by not actually supporting the team. (FYI, the NFL Sunday ticket which is needed to watch the Bengals outside the market does put revenue in the pocket of the people you are against.  Same with advertising on the radio)

I also know the facts, the Bengals have had no success in the past two decades to speak of. This is why I think it is so sweet when the Bengals are doing well.  The Bengals are in first place in the division, they just swept the 3 division rivals and can control their own destiny. Mo Egger has even come up with the magic number.  These are the things that make being a fan awesome. The same people that throw out the terms "Fair weather fan" and "Real fan" are some of the people that are supporting not rooting for the Bengals until they prove they are winners. (somehow in their minds this is different than being a fair weather fan).

I have tried posting my opinions in the message boards on other sites and have been berated that I am an enabler, sheep and not a real fan. I have been told that I am ignorant because I go to the football games because they are entertaining. I am part of the problem because I keep my season tickets. Many of the people slinging these insults never had season tickets. What really have they given up? Make no mistake, I love football, but at the end of the day it is just entertainment. Same as any movie or tv show. People are paid to perform and the viewer decides if they like that or not. For those of you putting more weight on your Sunday afternoons take a step back, realize it is a game, and let it go.

I challenge you to not call me a real fan. I own a website, 3 season tickets and a Bus.  I have an old ratty Boomer Esiason t shirt from when Boomer was a Bengal (the first time). I still pull out my James Brooks and Ickey Woods action figures.  I remember Tim Krumrie's leg in the Super Bowl. I still can't stand John Taylor.  I cheered when Blake hit Pickens with the rainbow even though the Bengals had no shot of winning.  I watched Dillion shatter the rushing record and later was there when he threw his pads in the stands. I still kringe when I think about Kimo and I still smile when Caldwell catches the pass from Palmer against the Steelers.

Buy a single game ticket, come check out the Bengals. I understand if you are not ready to buy a season ticket yet, it may take time. Buying a ticket now does not mean you forget what the Bengals record has been the past 19 years.  It simply says you like what the Bengals are doing right now.  Support the team the best way possible, by being there and cheering. Who knows, maybe this is the turn around and you can later say I was there when.

Well said.  Well said.  I tried to be rational with some forums.  It is next to impossible.

Almost like trying to tell Ohio State fans that they're really not that good.
